April Happenings

Post rib removal surgery, I am taking some time off work to rest and recover. I'm in a lot of pain but the kids sure keep me distracted with all of their activities!

Found the kids having a meeting about this...I can't wait to see the positive impact they have on this world!

Recovery walks with Ben and Bruno - nature is good for the soul.

The Math Olympiads - Nate and his team rocked it!

Benny boy at bat!

Keeping mom company. :)

Nate competing in his first track meet of 7th grade.

Cyrus, Ben and Coach Franklin! Ben and his buddy Cyrus have been playing up on the '09A team for two years and next season will go to their birth year.

Riley's team won the state cup again! Love the Crazy 8's!

Goodbye Rib

Turns out becoming an IronMan really did change me forever! After the blood clot returned for a third time, I had my first rib removed on April 16th. Doctors believe that my swim training last year created a smaller space between my clavicle and first rib. Something tweaked it in February and caused the vein to be compressed-thus the clots. It has been a scary 6 weeks - I am beyond blessed with loving family and friends and awesome medical care.

Me feeling pure joy after finishing the 2.4 mile swim of the Lake Placid IronMan in July2017. One of the best days of my life...but no more long distance swims or IronMans for me after this ordeal!

Mom on duty - home from the hospital and grocery shopping with my blood drain from rib removal surgery.

Crazy scar in my armpit. So thankful for this procedure!
When you are recovering from having a rib removed and your sons ask you to please add highlights to their hair even though you have no clue what you are doing-you do it. Looking good boys! The 90’s are back! We have decided that only good decisions are made while taking pain medicine. The boys love it. I just asked them to jump and throw a punch to the side and say “bye bye bye” and they have no idea what I am talking about.

Spring Break Change of Plans

For Christmas this year our big present to the kids was to take them to Europe for the first time over spring break.  Due to my surprise blood clot and the fact that it returned despite trying two different blood thinners, we learned in late March that we had to postpone our trip to London and Paris. Total bummer. But like true NorthWesterners - when it rains, we put on our raincoats and play in the puddles. So we were home for the kids soccer games and spent a few days in Suncadia (resort one hour away). Turns out it was very good that we stayed close to home because that darn DVT came back for a third time...but first, enjoy our spring break pics.

Happy to be a soccer mama!

On the second day in Suncadia I got out of the shower and saw all these collateral veins had popped back up. When you have a clot, your body creates new pathways to get around the clot - how amazing is that!  This was now a telltale sign to me that the clot was back for a third time despite being closely monitored on blood thinner.  We had a consultation scheduled already and we were told it was 50/50 on whether or not the vascular surgeon would recommend I have a rib removed. Seeing this, I knew it was inevitable.
